SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT "WE OWN THE GAME! NOT THE WASTE!

the sustainability concept “We own the Game! Not the Waste!” is a shared initiative for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin. Over the course of ten event days it combines a consistent re-use system with waste separation.
The goal is to reduce waste to a minimum and establish a circular system together with fans through correct waste separation and the re-use system.
The measures
1. Waste separation
A strict waste separation system with two fractions has been established:
Packaging/Plastic and General- & Food Waste

2. Re-use system
There will be no single use products at the arena. Food and drinks will exclusively be given out in re-usable dishware. The cups and plates can be returned at the appropriately marked return stations.
Deposit: 3 € per cup/plate
Return: The cups and plates can only be returned at the appropriately marked return stations (recognizable by beach flags with the words "Return Cups & Plates Here").
Deposit return: After you have returned your cups and plates, the deposit will be returned to you cashless.
3. Volunteers
Volunteers can be found throughout the arena to help with all questions regarding the waste separation and re-use systems. They have been trained ahead of the tournament by Berlin Recycling and play a key part in the implementation of the sustainability concept by helping fans with their waste separation questions. They will be wearing orange polos for maximum visibility.
